Personal Supports

Personal Supports is one-to-one assistance delivered where you already live — your own apartment, your family's home, your neighborhood. It is built for people who need support with parts of the day, not all of it.

What this service includes

  • Activities of daily living

Personal care, grooming, dressing, meal preparation, medication reminders and household tasks, with as much or as little hands-on help as the person wants.

  • Community participation

Getting to the gym, the library, a class, a place of worship, a volunteer shift or a friend's house — and building the skills and confidence to do more of it independently.

  • Independence coaching

Money management, using public transit, scheduling appointments, cooking a meal start to finish, and the other skills that decide whether someone needs a program or a nudge.

  • Employment and education support

Practical help around a job or a course — the routine that surrounds it, getting there reliably, and staying organised week to week.

  • Family caregiver respite

Scheduled, reliable hours so a parent, sibling or spouse can work, rest, travel or handle their own medical care without arranging cover from scratch every time.

  • Support that flexes

A few hours a week or most days — schedules are set with you and adjusted as circumstances change, rather than fixed to a program calendar.

The service most families should ask about first

Families often assume the only option is a residential placement, and it is not. A large share of the people we support live at home and always will — what they needed was twelve hours a week, a consistent person, and someone who would actually show up.

Personal Supports exists for that. It is also the service that keeps residential placement from becoming necessary before anyone is ready for it.

Matching matters more than scheduling

Consistency is the whole service. A rotating cast of unfamiliar staff undoes the point of one-to-one support, especially for someone who takes time to trust new people. We match on temperament, interests, language and schedule, and we work to keep the same Direct Support Professional with the same person.

When a regular DSP is out, cover comes from someone who has already met the person where we can manage it.

Respite is real support, not a luxury

If you are a parent providing most of a person’s care, the hours you get back are what make the arrangement sustainable for years rather than months. We schedule respite as a standing commitment — not something to be negotiated each time you need it.
